  2. Christmas Tree Safety On the average, 400 Christmas tree fires occur yearly. These fires cause: • 10 Deaths • Over 100 Serious injuries • Over $15 million in damages Fires are declining every year due to awareness and an increased use of artificial trees

  3. Fire-resistant artificial trees are highly recommended. • If you get a real tree: • It should not lose its needles when tapped on the ground. • Cut 1” off the trunk then place in water immediately to help the tree absorb water. Produced by NAS Sigonella Fire Prevention Office, AC Andrew Allen

  4. A 6 foot tree will use 1 gallon of water every 2 days. • Check water level daily. • Keep the tree away from floor heaters, fire places, or other heat sources.

  5. Use only UL-approved lights, and no more than 3 strands linked together. • Wash your hands after handling lights and decorations – Due to lead dust found on most imported decorations.

  6. Use miniature lights - which have cool-burning bulbs. • Turn off the Christmas lights when you sleep, or leave your home. • Never use real candles on or near an artificial or real tree.

  7. Ensure tinsel or artificial icicles are of non-leaded material. • Lead base materials are hazardous if eaten by children or pets. • Avoid decorations that tend to break easily or have sharp edges.

  8. Keep tree trimmings that are small or have removable parts out of the reach of small children. These pieces may be swallowed.

  9. Do not let the water for the tree dry up. A dry tree can easily catch fire. Dispose of the tree properly. NEVER BURN IN THE FIREPLACE

  10. Report Fires immediately to your local Fire Department Call 911 or 938-3333 (cell phone) West Point Fire Department is available 24/7 – even Christmas!

  11. Please remember that live Christmas trees are not allowed on West Point except family housing per USMA regulation 420-3.
