Only three FCC-approved radar bands are in used: Operating Frequency With fixed antenna size, the higher the frequency is, the smaller the beam angle is. = =
Stationary Radar Measuring the difference in speed between a target and the gun itself, the gun must be stationary. If the measurement is made from a moving vehicle, it will give the speed difference between the two vehicles. Moving Radar Receiving reflected signals from both the target and stationary background (road, guard rails, trees, etc.). It compares the target signal with the background signal instead of comparing the frequency of the transmitted and reflected signal.
Radar Gun Limitations Antenna size: about 2 inches (5.1 cm) in diameter = = Side lobes are 20 times (13 dB) less sensitive than the main lobe.
Who is speeding? Truck Radar Gun convertible It displays the speed of the strongest reflected signal. If all vehicles were identical, the strongest reflection would be from the closest car.
Solution: Laser The laser gun sends out a beam of laser light that is so narrow and precise it must be aimed with an optical sight. The operator trigger a beam of light, and the unit measures the reflected beam. • Advantage: • Precise vehicle identification • Disadvantage: • Only be used for stationary position • Environmental sensitive • Operationally complex
Radar Detector Legality: Radar and Laser detectors are legal in non-commercial vehicles in 49 states (except Virginia and Washington D.C.) Principle: A receiver tuned to detect the frequencies used by radar gun. Radar can not work around curves, but radar detectors can! Instant-on Radar: The radar or laser unit is in a stand-by mode until a vehicle approaches. Then when you are within range, the unit emits a beam and calculates your speed within one second.
