Deezer Deezer is a French music/social website It is basically an online radio (similar to Pandora) Users can stream millions of licensed songs and create libraries Social Media: users can follow an artist or album on Deezer, comment on songs, and share music with friends and other users
Facebook and Deezer Deezer and Facebook have teamed up to allow users to see what music their friends like Finds songs for users via Facebook What you listen to on Deezer can be shared with all your Facebook friends Good or bad feature?
Facebook’s popularity Most prefer Facebook over Twitter Many students only had negative things to say about Twitter
Comparisons • The French students used it more • If something happens, it shows up on Facebook • Write on each other’s walls • Comment on pictures (new & old) • Post statuses and locations • Constantly on Facebook on phones • Define identity • Not just communication tool
Les Mobiles • Similar to American teenagers • Constant texting • Without having my own phone to text on: • Realized how much we use them • Host parents reactions • Our reactions if we don’t have our phones • Cell phones= Drama
Phones at School • Basically says: No phones in the school building at ANY time • At my school: No phones only in class • Hugues Capet had strict phone policy • Teachers would confiscate phone • Turn phone in to office • Parents would have to drive to school and pick up the phone
Phones at School • Not all teachers always followed protocol • One teacher explained parents (and students) complain • Hassle to confiscate phones • Frequently saw students using phones under tables • Texted • Played games • Checked Facebook • Several admitted to using phones to cheat on a test • Openly used phones outside • Still used phones in buildings with no teachers around
In the Classroom • Each room had a mounted projector • Many rooms had: • TV • VCR and DVD players • Computer • Old-fashioned slide projector • Some teachers used projector and TVs • TVs and computers were mostly used in my language and science classes
In the Classroom • Using technology was teacher’s choice • History teacher never used any • Brought maps into class • Always wrote notes on white board or chalk board • When a phone went off in his class everyone giggles and looked around for the owner • Students said he never used computers or TVs • Language teachers used movies • Wuthering Heights • Read excerpt, watched full film
In the Classroom • English Class with Madame Mossbach • Brought personal Macbook to class • One of few teachers who used the projector • Gave handouts to class over topics • Typed notes up with class • Projector did not work a few times • If it did not work, no one came to fix it • Had no lesson plan for the day after it broke • No wifi in the school • In Spanish students typed vocab words on computer in class
In the Classroom In physics class used projector and computer Watched videos on energy and production of electricity Class is very attentive and serious even while watching the movie Sometimes movie day= fun day, except in physics
Le CDI • 10 computers line wall • Never use computers for Facebook or games • “Every social networking site is blocked. There is a filter for other websites as well.” • Available at any time • With a class printing is free • Or €2 for 20 sheets • Don’t frequently use CDI computers other than with class • “Everyone uses Wikipedia, but without verifying the sources or looking on other sites that are more reliable. Wikipedia is not banned here at school.” • Each student has a username
At School • Students have online grades • Students can email teachers, usually talk in person • Not all teachers offer their email • School announcement board • Teachers don’t publish notes on webpage • Teachers don’t give out their phone numbers
