Train Control • Signals and routes are set by signallers in train control centres • Some routes are automatically set by computer based signalling systems • Older signalling systems utilised mechanical levers physically joined to points and signals
Driver Indications • Signals provide the train driver information on the route ahead • Can indicate whether the train will be travelling straight ahead or through a junction or turnout • Tells the driver when to commence braking
Driver Indications • In busy and complex signalling areas more signals are used to allow trains to travel closer together • More signals give the driver more information about the conditions ahead – allows them to drive their trains more efficiently Application: Closely spaced signalling in high traffic metropolitan areas.
Driver Indications • Yellow indications tell the driver to commence braking • The next signal is usually placed at braking distance plus a safety margin • If yellow signals are not used signals are placed so they can be sighted some distance away
