  1. UNITING THE ELECTRIC GRID October 2009 The Tres amigas project

  2. Project Summary • Tres Amigas Super Station (TASS) will be the first system to unite the three U.S. power grids • Able to carry gigawatts of renewable power from region to region • Centrally located in Clovis, New Mexico • Will utilize the latest advances in energy technologies, including superconductor power cables, voltage source converters and large-scale energy storage systems • Will form the nation’s first renewable energy market hub Tres Amigas Will Unite the U.S. Power Grid

  3. The Need • Three primary grid exist today in North America: Eastern Interconnection, Western Interconnection and Texas Interconnection (ERCOT) • Several small-scale DC ties today connect one Interconnection to another, but none tie all three Interconnections together • Areas rich in wind and solar resources are not being developed today due to a lack of transmission • Areas that are being developed today have a limited end market • Variability in power supply from renewable energy resources creating significant disturbances for the local grid operators and Interconnections A more nationalized power grid is needed to promote renewable energy generation…

  4. The Answer: Tres Amigas The TresAmigas Super Station: • Provides a robust switching station that enhances the reliability of America’s power grids • Broadens the addressable market for wind, solar and geothermal sites to all three Interconnects • Lowers the cost of energy by opening new markets • Optimizes and stabilizes the flow of renewable energy within the three Interconnects • Takes advantage of available wind and solar generation by enabling its transmission to areas with peak demand • Helps America achieve its renewable energy targets Tres Amigas is key to meeting the nation’s aggressive renewable energy targets

  5. Location of TASS 14,400 square acres (22.5 sq. miles) of land in Clovis, New Mexico already allocated for project
