What makes a successful leader? What do these coaches / leaders have in common? They all have certain defining attributes What is an attribute? ‘A quality or feature regarded as a characteristic or inherent part of someone or something’
What are these attributes? • Skills = the ability to do something well; have expertise, demonstrate it well and successfully. • Qualities = a distinctive attribute or characteristic possessed by someone. • Responsibilities = a duty to deal with / be responsible for something or of having control over someone. What do these mean – can you define them?
Skills, Qualities, Responsibilities - which are which? In your table groups on the A3 paper group the following into the 3 groups above: • Professional conduct, • Organisationof equipment, • Use of language, • Equality • Insurance, • Child protection, • Evaluation • Appearance, • Enthusiasm, • Confidence • Target setting, • Leadership styles, • Motivation, • Humor, • Personality • Health and safety, • Communication • Legal obligations, • Ethics & Values, • Rules & regulations. • Knowledge • Activity structure,
What goes where? Skills Communication, organisationof equipment, knowledge Advanced skills = activity structure, target setting, use of language, evaluation Qualities Appearance, enthusiasm, confidence Additional qualities = like leadership styles, motivation, humor and personality. Responsibilities professional conduct, health and safety, and equality. Wider responsibilities = insurance, child protection, legal obligations, ethics and values, rules and regulations.
Skills, Qualities, responsibilities • What are the different skills, qualities and responsibilities of a coach / Leader? • In your groups tell me which groups the key words belong to Now on the hand out – • match the key terms to the description • Identify which key terms are skills, qualities and responsibilities – colour in the boxes / symbol them accordingly. • See next 2 slides to check your work.
Lesson task Choose 2 coaches from the world of sport (these can be PE teacher) and do the following in your exercise books / work sheet: • List / describe ALL the skills, qualities and responsibilities of EACH coach you have chosen • Explain how each of your 2 coaches demonstrates the skills, qualities and responsibilities in being an effective coach. • Evaluate / compare & contrast the 2 coaches chosen saying why they are good/bad/similar/ different coaches against each other and who is the best between the 2.

You have contacted the MK News to discuss how to develop interest in volunteering in sports leadership. The editor Miss Green has asked you to write 2 articles that explores the requirements of becoming a successful sports leader, using examples of successful sports leaders to demonstrate attributes and responsibilities required.
