High Frequency Spelling Patterns I use this list in direct instruction. I created this from a handout I received in EDUC 310 at EWU. These 37 spelling patterns allow children to read and spell over 500 words commonly used by young children (Wylie & Durrell, 1970). Purpose: Students to feel successful at reading. Instruction: In the beginning, explain that noticing spelling patterns can help students decode words. Model this concept. Read the top line. Then, they read in a group or individually the words below. Listen, and correct mistakes immediately, but gently. Later on, have the student control the pace. Praise students often and have a good time!
Activities Think of other words that rhyme with ___ ? Use one or all of the words in a sentence, then share it with your shoulder buddy. Pick out one word and ask students to think of a word that means the same thing as ___ . Share your answer. Draw a picture of what you think of when you hear the word. Write a short poem or song using the three rhyming words. Put the three words in alphabetical order.
