MENINGITIS & SEPTICAEMIA Meningitis is an inflammation of the lining surrounding the brain and spinal cord which is caused by bacterial or viral infections. One danger is that the signs and symptoms of meningitis can be easily mistaken for other common, less serious infections. A child with bacterial meningitis, however, often deteriorates rapidly. Septicaemia is the blood poisoning from the disease. Meningitis and septicaemia without prompt medical treatment can be fatal.
Meningitis RECOGNITION SIGNS AND SYMPTOMS • Cold hands and feet (Early sign) • Pain in libs or joints (Early sign) • Abnormal skin colour (Early sign) • Severe headaches • Fever or high temperature • Stiffness in the neck • Dislike to light in the eyes • Drowsiness and disorientation • Seizures • Skin rash that looks similar to small bruises that will not disappear ifpressure is applied Please bear in mind that they may not all appear together. If you have any suspicions get emergency medical care immediately by calling the child’s parents and the doctor. If a doctor is not available go straight to the nearest casualty department. If the rash is present, call 999/112 for emergency help.
