  2. Our Mission: Preserving the Lineage Fund provides the means through which the Mahayana teachings can be transmitted from Tibetan lamas to their students by sponsoring initiations and oral transmissions which Lama ZopaRinpoche has identified as essential for the preservation of the Dharma.

  3. What is an Oral Transmission? An oral transmission, or “lung,” is when a Buddhist lama recites aloud a text for which they hold the lineage, (meaning, the lama has received it properly from a previous qualified lama). Students who hear the entire text is considered to have received the oral transmission of the text. This occurs in an unbroken continuum, ultimately going back to the author of the text. When one receives an oral transmission or initiation from a qualified Buddhist master, one is receiving the teachings of the Buddha in their original form, passed perfectly from master to student through generations in an unbroken continuum.

  4. The aim of the Preserving the Lineage Fund is to cover all expenses that are incurred during specific transmissions that are deemed imperative by Lama ZopaRinpoche. These expenses can include the sponsorship of events when oral transmissions are given, including food and offerings, and the preservation of specific teachings in any form. Through supporting these transmissions given by qualified Tibetan lamas, the fund helps FPMT fulfill its primary objective: preserving the Mahayana tradition. The cost to sponsor the initiations each year is estimated at US$50,000.

  5. Preserving an Unbroken Lineage As this world loses the last remaining lamas to be born and educated in Tibet, it is imperative that Tibetan Buddhism is preserved and passed on in an unbroken lineage to future lamas and students.

Current Priorities In April 2012, the Preserving the Lineage Fund sponsored the fifth year of initiations given by His Holiness the SakyaTrizin to many high lamas including Lama ZopaRinpoche, DhakpaRinpoche, DagriRinpoche and others from the Sakya tradition, as well as many of the Sangha of the Sakya Monastery and Nunnery in Dehradun, India.

  7. This is a rare and utterly precious opportunity to receive the entire collection of initiations from His Holiness the SakyaTrizin called WangyaNorbuTangwa (Garlands of Jewels of Hundreds of Initiations).

  8. Preserving the WangyaNorbuTangwa has become a matter of urgency as the lineage of the initiations had completely died out in the Gelug tradition. Initially, Rinpoche with other Gelug lamas, including KirtiTsenshabRinpoche, received the first half of these initiations from His Eminence ChobgyeTrichenRinpoche in 1991, but age and poor health stopped him from giving the transmissions in their entirety.
