Read over your work • Some of your expression is terrible. I can see what you are trying to say but it is really unclear so read over your writing and check if it makes sense.
Explanation of tone • Please don’t write about tone like this…. • The tone the Carr-Gregg is using is a direct and confident tone. • It sounds clunky and it wastes words you could be using for the rest of your analysis.
Integrate the discussion of tone. • Carr-Gregg adopts a direct and confident tone contending that….(write contention) • Carr-Gregg argues/contends in a direct and confident tone that….
Don’t generalise • I don’t want to see general explanations of the effect on the reader. • Eg. The writer uses a rhetorical question to involve the reader in the issue. Or The writer uses expert opinion to make his argument more credible. • This tells me very little. It shows very little understanding of the article.
Try this… • Carr-Gregg adopts a slightly more aggressive tone with the question, ‘Don’t believe me?’ He includes this question at the end of his piece, importantly after he has saturated the audience with anecdotal and expert evidence. Parents who continue to question his opinion are thus positioned to feel ignorant and even stupid, particularly as this is followed up with a reminder of the case of ‘Robert’ from the beginning of the piece.
Expert Evidence Carr-Gregg introduces the statistic that ‘6-10 per cent of users have a dependency that can be as destructive as alcoholism and drug addiction.’ By showing that the majority of young people are effected, Carr-Gregg encourages parents to feel alarmed that their child may be affected. He also uses the comparison to addictions that parents would be aware of and familiar with to help them understand the seriousness of the issue.
