TCMC (Technical Committee on Multimedia Computing) • The TC’s subject area covers all aspects of multimedia hardware and software systems that integrate multimedia information in local, networked, and mobile computing systems. • Capture, creation, transmission, storage, and presentation of multimedia information • Hardware and software issues that are unique to multimedia computing • Development of multimedia standards, user interfaces, programming environments, and applications • The principal keywords that define the field: • Multimedia computing, communications, systems and application innovations May 4-5, 2011 TAC Workshop 1
TCMC • Conferences • Sponsor: • IEEE Intl. Sym. on Multimedia (ISM) (annual attendance: 100) • TC board members are represented in the leadership team of ISM • Co-sponsor (2010-2011): • IEEE Intl. Conf. on Semantic Computing (ICSC) (annual attendance: 140) • IEEE Int. Conf. on Multimedia and Expo (ICME) (annual attendance: 250) • IEEE Int. Conf. on Bioinformatics and Bioengineering (BIBE) (annual attendance: 100) • IEEE Sym. on Visual Languages and Human-Centric Computing (VL/HCC) (annual attendance: 80) • TC board member involvement • One or more TC board members served in each of the above conferences as program co-chair, steering committee members, or other organizing roles. Many TCMC members are also PC members of one or more of these conferences • Publications (2010-2011) • ISM and other conference proceedings • Special issue on ‘Multimedia Semantic Computing’ with Intl. J. of Multimedia Data Engineering and Management (IJMDEM) • Several other special issues with International Journal of Semantic Computing (IJSC) were organized for selected papers from ISM’10 and ICSC’10 May 4-5, 2011 TAC Workshop 2
TCMC • Reaching the Members • The TC has a monthly newsletter, subscribed and distributed by email and web portal • Two Executive Committee meetings were held in 2010 in conjunction with IEEE Intl. Conf. on Semantic Computing (September 22-24, 2010, Carnegie Mellon University, Pittsburgh, PA, USA) and IEEE Intl. Sym. on Multimedia (December 13-15, Taichung, Taiwan) • The next TC meeting is planned to take place in conjunction with 2011 IEEE Intl. Conf. on Multimedia and Expo, July 11-15, Barcelona, Spain • Executive Committee is in frequent email or telephone contact to discuss issues relevant to the community, and to TC operations • TC member demographics: • 1303 members from 65 countries, 6 continents • Academia: 70% Industry: 30% • Benefits of being a TC member: • Opportunities to interact and collaborate with other TC members and industry liaisons • Opportunities to be promoted to the technical program committee and/or the organizing committee of internationally renowned conferences • Opportunities to be invited as reviewers and promoted to editorial members of internationally renowned journals • Exposed to real-world emerging multimedia applications and involved in the development of multimedia standards May 4-5, 2011 TAC Workshop 3
TCMC • Recent Accomplishments / Highlights • Launched a new web portal for TCMC (http://www.computer.org/portal/web/tcmc/home) • Sponsored and co-sponsored several IEEE international conferences including IEEE Intl. Sym. on Multimedia (ISM) and IEEE Intl. Conf. on Multimedia and Expo (ICME) • Organized several special issues with International Journal of Semantic Computing (IJSC) and International Journal of Multimedia Data Engineering and Management (IJMDEM) • Involved in initiating IEEE Technical Committee on Semantic Computing(TCSEM) • Plans • Recruit the Chair for the Subcommittee on Conferences • Recruit Industry liaisons • Identify more effective ways of fostering the interactions and collaborations among TC members • Proactively recruit new TC members from under-represented groups • Challenges • Promote ISM to be IEEE’s flagship conference in the multimedia area • Impediments: a relatively short history of the conference, a lack of industry sponsorship • Promote high quality papers from TCMC-sponsored conferences to be published in flagship journals such as IEEE Trans. on Multimedia, ACM Trans. on Multimedia Computing, Communications and Applications, IEEE Multimedia Magazine, and so on. • Impediments: a relatively small pool of submissions May 4-5, 2011 TAC Workshop 4
