Let’s Recall! • Ionic compounds - A bond is formed through an electron transfer between a metal and a non-metal.
Molecular compounds form when two non-metals share outer electrons. • This bond is known as a covalent bond
Diatomic Molecule • Is a molecule that consists of two atoms joined together with a covalent bond. • Can be between the same or different atoms (EX) H2, F2, HF
Naming – molecular compounds • For molecular compounds, prefixes are used to specify the number of atoms. • (Ex) Dinitrogenpentoxide Two (= di) nitrogen atoms Five (=pent) oxygen atoms N2O5
Practice #1 • PCl3 1. Write the names of both elements in the same order Phosphorus Chlorineide 2. Add pre-fixes(Remember prefix “mono” is never used for the first element.) Phosphorus trichloride
Name the Molecular Compounds • N2O • NI2 • CCl4 • OF2 • P2O5 • N2O3
Write the formula for the following molecular compounds • Carbon Monoxide • Sulfur Tetrafluoride • DinitrogenTetroxide • NitrogenTribromide • Carbon disulfide
