Basic Information • Afternoon component: 4 hrs • Clinical decision-making (CDM) • Short-menu and short-answer case-based questions • About 60 cases; 1-4 questions per case • 15-20 non-validated “test cases” – do not count • May need to ask for more info, order diagnostics, make diagnoses, or prescribe therapy • Be specific with diagnoses, doses, etc. • READ carefully! • Not following instructions will result in a score of ‘0’
Components • Pediatrics • Obs/Gyne • Psychiatry • Internal Medicine • Surgery • Cultural-Communication, Ethical, Legal, and Organizational medicine (C2LEO) • Basic epidemiology (PPV, NPV, RR, OR)
Studying Tips • Study the way you always study • Budget your time • Take breaks • Focus on “Sure Things” • Pediatrics • Psychiatry • Obs/Gyn • Legislation, ethics, epidemiology • Focus on things you haven’t done much of during electives.
Study Tips • Internal medicine, surgery: common illnesses, things emphasized over med school (e.g., pathology in IBD, DKA, ddx of red, painful joint), basics every physician should know (treatment of AOM, approach to lytes, acid-base, acute abdo pain, etc.) • Do lots of sample tests!! (USMLE, LMCC) • Find .torrents, share with colleagues
Exam Tips • Read carefully • Guess where you can • Move on • Watch your time • Sleep well – especially the night before • Take questions as they are – not tricks • Don’t overanalyze adaptive questionning
On the 2009 exam… • Pediatric febrile illnesses • Dysfunctional uterine bleeding • Abdo pain / GI • Psych meds S/E • Hypertensive disorders of pregnancy • Ethics (consent, competence) • Disclaimer: I’ve successfully repressed most memory of the exam.
