Pictograph: Painting on a surface like a cave wall. Petroglyph: Design carved into rock or other surface.
Discovered by four boys on September 12th, 1940. Caves are filled with pictographs and petroglyphs of hundreds of animals. Dated to about 17,00 years ago. Cave of Lascaux, France
There are almost 600 pictures of animals, mostly horses. Other animals painted are stags, bulls, and bison Only one man is painted.

Why did they paint the cave? What do the paintings mean? Just the animals that were around at that time. Instructions on how to hunt or not to hunt. The cave was used for religious ceremonies. Paintings were for good luck in hunting.

Cave Art in 2010 Instructions: • Using a large piece of construction paper and your choice of art utensils, construct a piece of “cave” art that would allow someone 17,000 years from now to understand what our culture was like. • Points: 25
