1. The Essentials of Work2 Thessalonians 3:6-15 In this scripture, Apostle Paul made a third attempt to address the recurring problem of people within the church who refused to work. These members didn’t refuse work because of a poor economy, maltreatment, unjust wages or hazardous work conditions, but due to false teachings regarding the Day of the Lord. They wrongly believed that the need for work no longer existed because of the advent of the Day of the Lord. That false idea exists today with some believing they don’t need to work because of the availability of public assistance, support from family, friends and enabling relationships, or through illegal activities such as selling drugs. Like those Thessalonians, people today can be misled. 1.The Worth Of Work. God performed the first acts of work in the Bible; we refer to them as His Creative Works. Since God performs work, work is a worthy endeavor for man, reflecting God’s glory. Sloth and laziness are unbecoming to our goal of Godliness. 2. The Willingness Of Work. Culture plays a role in people’s work attitudes towards; the early Greeks believed work to be demeaning, only fit for slaves. There are some today who believe that personal wealth justifies disdain for work, despite the reality that those who gain wealth often work more. There are politicians who promote policies that disparage work, diverting the public with gratifications of immediate, shallow desires. 3. The Warnings Of Refusal To Work. Paul warned the Thessalonians who refused to work that they would be isolated as punishment, cut off from their freeloading support.This was to encourage them from being disruptive busy bodies to becoming productive workers in God’s Kingdom.
