  1.   2. Germany: Knew it was surrounded by enemies & must act fast to win this war • Schlieffen Plan: attack France 1st quickly (since it had few railroads), then turn to Russia • France realized this & put all their troops along border w/Germany

  3. Germany asked Belgium (who was neutral – didn’t take sides) if they could pass through • Belgium said NO! • So, Ger invades Belg • Britain was friends w/Belg & this forces Britain to enter the war

  4. Western Front: front is the place of battle • Ger gains several quick victories: • Overtakes Belgium • Gets nearly to Paris, France’s capital city • But, France fights back & pushes Ger back • Ger’s quick attack slows to a stalemate(nothing moves) in France • This gives Russia time to mobilize (move troops & equipment) and begin to attack Ger in east

  5. Trench Warfare • Each side builds a ditch • Area in b/w ditches is called NO MAN’s LAND • In 1 day – 20,000 British troops will die • Millions will die only to gain a few miles of territory
