Topics that will be covered • Equipment • Procedure • Flat Line • Measuring Audible Cookies • Transverse bars w/ Inverted Rib • Thermo on FC-5
Procedure References: 1. Florida Method of Test for FIELD EVALUATION of TRAFFIC MARKING MATERIALS Designation: 5-541 Standard Specifications Section 711 Developmental Specs. Sections 701 & 702
Center the gauge over the marking material in an area avoiding glass spheres and read the values of all three dial indicators.
By procedure, the staff will take three measurements with them being at the beginning, middle and end of each one mile section of line type. Then average of the three location measurements shall be used for acceptance of the one mile section of line type (FM 5-541).
Problem: Cookies are too tall for device to measure.
Solution: Take a reading across the cookie in the same direction as the line
Then one right in front of or behind the cookie, add the two numbers together.
Device can be used to measure this type of line. Apply base lines having a thickness of 0.079 to 0.120 inches, exclusive of the transverse audible bars, when measured above the pavement surface at the edge of the base line. The profiled baseline shall have a minimum height of 0.155 inches, when measured above the pavement surface at the edge of the inverted rib profile. The thickness in the bottom of the profile marking shall be 0.035 to 0.050 inches. The individual profiles shall be located transversely across the full width of the traffic stripe.
Issue: Having trouble getting required thickness due to the road soaking up material.
Solution: Pay close attention to final thickness measurement.
Things to Remember • Apply markings only to dry surfaces and when the ambient air and surface temperature is at least 50 deg and rising for asphalt surfaces and 60 deg and rising for concrete surfaces. (Dev. Spec. 702-4.1) • Before applying traffic stripes over portland cement concrete surface, apply a primer, sealer or surface preparation adhesive. (Dev. Spec. 702-4.1)
