Speaking Safely…Who Are We? We’re This Not This
Safety System at XenoTech Corporate Policies and initiatives
Safety Regulations, Policies and Procedures at XenoTech Agency and Local Authorities Policies and Plans Occupational Health and Safety Policy Controlled Substance Plan Chemical Hygiene Plan Hazardous Waste Management Plan Bloodborne Pathogen Exposure Plan Fire Prevention Plan Personal Protective Equipment Plan Respiratory Protection Plan Emergency Action Plan Lockout/Tagout Plan OSHA: Worker Safety and Health DEA: Controlled Substances NRC: Radiation Safety EPA and KDHE: Waste and Environmental hazards DOT/IATA: Hazard shipping Safety Standards and Policies are managed by XenoTech’s Safety Officer, with support from a Safety Team. Safety at XenoTech is governed by many different agencies and local authorities:
Safety History Since 2008 We’ve increased employees by about 21% over 5 years. To keep OSHA recordables at zero, we’re implementing many different strategies, such as: increased training, Safety audits, easier reporting of hazards, and increased awareness of hazards.
One of Our Greatest Concerns • Over 700 Hazardous Chemicals • Some highly toxic and potent • Some Corrosives • Some flammables • Some reactives and oxidizers • Some are radioactive • Potentially Biohazardous Material • Human Liver Tissue • Primate Tissue
However… • All these are in small quantities, generally: • Below 500 g (~ 1 lb) for solids or • Less than 4 L (1 gal) for liquids Note: this picture isn’t old…the room is under yellow light
Current Situation OSHA and XenoTech require that every hazardous chemical be accompanied by an MSDS
OSHA Requires GHS Compliance • On March 20, 2012, OSHA adopted the Globally Harmonized System of labeling which has new requirements for MSDSs to make them more easily understandable. • XenoTech considered this and the cumbersome system currently used and decided to invest in the MaxCom MSDS Management System. • GHS Compliant • Cloud Based • Easily Updated • Easy to Access • Provides Training Modules • Electronic Copies Reduce Paper Usage
MaxCom Advantages MSDSs kept remotely to be easily updated. Safe use guides provide different view of info. Online training on classes of chemicals. Label printing function. Custom Report List.
Simplification for Understanding XT Employees can look up the full MSDS if they need. Or they can view the Safe Use Guides which give the most important information.
Investment in the Future • An investment of time and money will yield: • decreased time spent on updating • increased understanding • decreased time spent on waste determinations • increased time spent on other facets of Safety • Continued OSHA Compliance • Safer more aware work force
