  1. A QUIET LIFE “And that ye study to be quiet, and to do your own business, and to work with your own hands, as we commanded you” (I Thess. 4:11).

  2. “Study” • “Make it your ambition” (NASV) • “Strive restlessly”; “Strive earnestly” (Vine) • QUIET – To lead a quiet life doesn’t mean to be silent. A word used of those simply going about their own business, not running hither and yon. • Opposite of a hectic, harried life

  3. Satan’s Objective • He works on us with “extremes” – indolent (lazy) or frantic (panic). • This is not an injunction against “disorganization”. Some chaos is natural to most of us. Parties or vacations. • Some will be “louder” than others, some more active. • What are the qualities of a “quiet life”?

  4. Peaceful Confidence • Not in our self, but in our God. He wants a relationship with us. (indolence vs. panic) • We were lost, but Jesus paid the penalty for our sin. • Our obedience is necessary – 2 Thess. 2:13-14; I Peter 1:22. • Phil. 4:7; Gal. 5:22.

  5. Don’t Worry – Be Happy • “Oh, ye of little faith” • Read Matt. 6:24-34. • Work to avoid disaster. A careful life can help us miss many of the problem areas. • But some things are beyond our control. • Worry won’t help. God can. • Don’t forget to ask Him.

  6. Be Calm • Think of Jesus before the High Priest, Pilate and Herod. No panic, no struggle. • No resignation, just calm and thoughtful. • Composure of mind and action is a trait we learn from the Christ. • Phil. 4:8; 2 Cor. 10:5 – our thoughts should be channeled.

  7. Genuine Patience • “In your patience possess ye your souls.” (Luke 21:19). • No “grit your teeth”, and tough it out. • To be constantly “up in the air” is to advertise our lack of stability and forbearance. • Eph. 4:1-3.

  8. Attend To Our Own Business • Busybodies are everywhere, First Century or 21st. • 2 Thess. 3:11; I Tim. 5:13; I Pet. 4:15. • It’s so easy to be a meddler. “If I were you, I’d…” • “Fanatics, busybodies and loafers, nearly every church has them!” Hendriksen • Work with our hands and heads.
