  2. Why Telemedicine? • I do volunteer work at hospitals. • Doctors check patients’ blood pressure, listen to their heart and lungs and check all their vital signs - all from miles away.

  4. What is Telemedicine? • It is the use of telecommunications to provide medical information and services. • It is when health professionals discuss a case over the telephone. • It is using satellite technology to broadcast a consultation between providers in two countries.

  6. Types of Technology Used. • There are two types of technology used in Telemedicine. • The first technology is called Store and Forward. • The second one is known as the two-way interactive television (IATV).

  7. What is Store and Forward? • It is used for transferring digital images from one location to another. • It is typically used for non-emergencies. • It is the most common application of telemedicine in use today.

  8. What about IATV? • It is used when a 'face-to-face' consultation is necessary. • It is usually between the patient in one location and a specialist in another location. • It has decreased in price and complexity over the past five years.

  9. Applications… Telemedicine technology has been used for: • In school health services by allowing school nurses to consult with physicians. • Mental health care to patients in rural jails. • Oncology • Hospice care.

  10. Any Barriers? • Many states will not allow out-of-state physicians to practice unless licensed in their state. • Many private insurers refuse to reimburse for telemedicine consults. • Fear of malpractice due to lack of lack of 'hands-on' interaction with patients.

To Sum it All Up! • Telemedicine is a new way for specialists to interact with patients on a daily basis. • Telemedicine requires no travel. • Telemedicine can be done at any time. • Telemedicine might encourage education or training for isolated or rural health practitioners. • Telemedicine still has a long way to go.
