  1. Sir Edward Richard Henry By: Kateryna Dyakiv and Mario Rivera

  2. Background History • Henry was born in London in 1850 and attended St. Edmund’s College. • He earned a degree from University College, London, in 1869 and a few years later began studying law at the Society Law of the Middle Temple

  3. The Beginning • In 1873, Henry passed the examinations to join the civil service in India. • In India he first became involved in matters related to criminal identification and fingerprinting.

  4. Henry Classification System • Published in the late 19th century • Efficient method for classifying fingerprints of a large group of subjects • Organizes fingerprints by physiological characteristics • System is based on the appearance of whorls • Must contain at least 2 deltas • 4 types: plain, central pocket, double loop, accidental

  5. How It Works.. • All 10 fingers are paired (one in the numerator & one in the denominator): • Each pair of fingers is given a value if a whorl pattern is found • 1st: 16, 2nd: 8, 3rd: 4, 4th: 2, & 5th: 1 • No other pattern receives points • In order for no fraction to end up with 0/0, we add 1 to the total.

  6. Example If a whorl was found only on the right index finger and the right middle finger, what would be the final fraction?
