Prepositions • When you write an occasion/position statement or a however statement, you can use prepositions to add variety to your writing. • Examples • Since the beginning of the year, school has become increasingly hectic. • Without good study skills, it is difficult to succeed in school.
To plus a verb • To plus a verb makes up what’s called an infinitive. • To be • To work • To laugh • To succeed • To dream
To plus a verb • Creates a complex sentence similar to an occasion/position statement. • To work in the entertainment industry, you have to be outgoing. • To run a marathon, training is essential. • To learn a foreign language, it helps to speak it often.
List Statements • List the categories you will be addressing in your paper. • Make sure you list categories (big ideas) and leave the details for the body.
Side by side statements • Two simple sentences, one after the other. • The function similar to an occasion/position statement. Sentence one is the occasion; sentence two is the position. • School is challenging. Meeting that challenge helps you learn success.
Assignment • Write four different topic sentences using the four varieties we learned today. • Prepositions • To plus a verb • List • Side by side statements. • Answer the following question. • What personality traits are most important when it comes to working in a group?
