  3. Question: • How would Jewish readers, or hearers, of the Canonical Gospels have understood the Gospels’ depictions of Jesus?

  4. Intertextuality • The term intertextuality refers to “the act of embedding one text inside another.”

  5. Intertextuality • “The embedded text might be a faint echo, which barely disturbs the primary text, or a clanging cymbal which demands attention.”—Steve Moyise, “Intertextuality and the Study of the Old Testament in the New Testament,” in The Old Testament in the New Testament: Essays in Honor of J. L. North, ed. Steve Moyise (Sheffield: Sheffield Academic Press, 2000), 14.

  6. Christological Intertextuality • This studies the ways in which the Gospels’ authors utilized Hebrew Bible Scriptures to describe Jesus’s identity.

  7. Synoptic Gospels • This phrase refers to Mark, Matthew, and Luke. • The word synoptic means “seen together.” • Mark, Matthew, and Luke share so much material in common that scholars called them synoptic Gospels.

  38. Matthew 1:23 • Matthew translates the Hebrew phrase, “God with us,” for his audience. • Immanuel in Isaiah 7:14 literally translates from the Hebrew as: “God with us.”

  50. “The Name of the Father, the Son, and the Holy Spirit…” • The Greek word Matthew uses for name is singular. • This implies Matthew espoused the view that the Father, the Son, and the Holy Spirit all shared the same name in some sense.
