  2. Who carries out AIDS research? • US federal agencies: CDC, DoD, FDA, NIH, USAID • Industry: pharmaceutical companies, biotech companies, product development public-private partnerships • Academia: • Foundations: Gates, Howard Hughes, Aaron Diamond, amfAR

  3. US federal agencies funding AIDS research • CDC: National Center for HIV/AIDS, Viral Hepatitis, STD, and TB Prevention (NCHHSTP), Division of HIV/AIDS Prevention (DHAP), leads on HIV prevention R&D, implementation, and evaluation of evidence-based HIV prevention programs; HIV surveillance, development & testing of effective biomedical interventions to reduce HIV transmission and HIV disease progression  • DoD: U.S. Military HIV Research Program (MHRP) dedicated to HIV vaccine development, prevention, disease surveillance, and care and treatment for HIV. Focus countries - Kenya, Nigeria, Tanzania, and Uganda • FDA: Regulatory research to establish product standards and develop improved testing methods to assess the safety of drugs and biologics; serves a review & oversight function in areas related to drugs, biologics, medical devices for prevention and treatment of HIV/AIDS, and AIDS-related conditions.

  4. US federal agencies (continued) • NIH: Office of AIDS Research w/in Office of the Director coordinates scientific, budgetary, legislative, & policy elements of the NIH AIDS research program; sets scientific priorities, enhances collaboration, & ensures research dollars are invested in highest priority areas of scientific opportunity that will lead to new tools in the global fight against AIDS. • USAID: Funds International AIDS Vaccine Initiative (IAVI); supports microbicides research; supports research and public health evaluations to provide local implementing partners, donors, and national governments w/evidence base to improve HIV/AIDS services and inform policy
