  2. Megalith A megalith is a large stone that has been used to construct a structure or monument, either alone or together with other stones

  3. Sarcophagus Sarcophagus is a stone coffin

  4. Kitchen Midden Archaeological site of a large mound (load) of domestic refuse marking a prehistoric settlement: usually including rubbish, bones, artifacts, seashells, etc.

  5. Radiocarbon dating A system for pinpointing the age of an artifact based on the fact that an object’s content lessens at a predictable time.

  6. Archaeology Locating and studying remains from the past.

  7. Excavation The process of digging up the remains from the past.

  8. Primary Source Information about people or events from the time from the time the people lived or the events took place. . This wall painting found in the Roman city of Pompeii is an example of a primary source about people in Pompeii in Roman times.

  9. Secondary source Information about people or events recorded long after the people lived or the events took place

  10. Prehistory The history of humans before writing began

  11. Fossil The remains or imprint of a human, animal, plant, or insect.

  12. Artifact A human-made object of archaeological or historical importance.

  13. Oral Tradition The stories, myths, or legends passed on by word of mouth from generation to generation.
