  1. Coastal Field Trip:Fort Caswell Carol Wooten, M.Ed., NBCT Hunter GT/AIG Magnet Elementary, Fifth Grade AIG Certified Kenan Fellow Presidential Awardee for Excellence in Math and Science Teaching

  2. Fort Caswell Address 100 Caswell Beach Rd. Oak Island, NC 28465-8439

  3. THANK YOU! Thank you for taking time out of your busy schedule to serve as a field trip chaperone! You are wonderful!

  4. Departure and Return • Students need to report to the back bus loop at 5:30 a.m. • Buses will arrive around 5:45 and we will begin loading. • We will return to Hunter at 8:00 pm. Parents will need to sign out students with the homeroom teacher. • If you are serving as a chaperone and driving, you may take your child home from Fort Caswell. Make sure the homeroom teacher knows the plans and remember to sign out your child.

  5. Stations • Marine Ecology • Blue Crabs (anatomy and behavior of the Atlantic Blue Crab and its importance in the salt water ecosystem) • Plankton Ecology • Plankton Ecology Lab • Tide and Dune Exploration • Beach Seine (explore the surf zones with sieves, learn about the ocean biome) • Seashore Discovery Walk

  6. Chaperone Fees • The tour company we are working with bundles all costs together. The fee of $80 includes the bus ride to and from Fort Caswell, the entire tour, and dinner. • Note: The bus trip is about 3 hours(6 hours round trip). • There is still space on the bus. If you would like to ride the bus rather than drive, please let Mrs. Wooten know. Thanks!

  7. Chaperones • As part of the Fort Caswell Environmental Stewardship Program, we will be discussing the guidelines for all adult chaperones. • At the end of the presentation, please be sure to legibly sign the form signifying that you have received this information.

  8. Chaperone Duties • Stay with assigned group at all times. • Closely monitor students during all educational activities. • Assist with adhering to all schedules. • Contact a teacher if there is a behavior issue or illness. • A student should always be with a parent chaperone or teacher—NO exceptions. • If a child needs to go to the restroom, a parent chaperone of the same gender needs to escort him/her to the restroom area. The chaperone will wait for the student and walk the student back to the group. It is often easier to take groups to the restroom, especially during the station switch.

  9. Responsibilities • The program and facilities are the responsibility of the Fort Caswell staff. • Group chaperones and leaders are responsible for discipline and safety.

  10. Parking • All vehicles must be parked so as to not obstruct the view of the roadway.

  11. Guest Assistance • Located at the main office or gate guard • Check with the security guard at the gate after office hours (5:00 pm to 8:00 am) and on weekends.

  12. Accidents and Emergencies • Notify the teachers first. We will then contact Caswell staff at the main office in case of an accident. Guest insurance pays up to $1,000 for medical treatment of injury due to an accident, off-campus trips excluded. Accident report and insurance forms are essential. Security guard staff may also be of assistance in contacting Caswell staff to assist you. • Notify the teacher first. We will make Caswell and security guard staff aware of any emergency need that requires service.

  13. Prohibitions • NO water balloons, shaving cream fights, water guns, skateboards, firearms, fireworks, alcoholic beverages, illegal drugs, and ATVs.

  14. Swimming • We will NOT be swimming during the field trip. • Students will go into the water up to their knees to go crabbing. • Teachers have a list of students who are not able to participate in water activities (as designated on the field trip form). Teachers are in charge of making sure these students do not go in the water.

  15. Forts and Batteries • Our field trip is structured with exciting hands-on activities. • Students should not be going off with parents or other adult chaperones to visit forts. • Always remain with the group.

  16. Request • Per Fort Caswell rules: Please encourage your group to take care of the educational buildings. Damage charges will be billed to the group leader or school. Extreme cases will result in the suspension of privileges.

  17. We are looking forward to a wonderful educational field trip! Please sign the chaperone meeting form at this time. 
