What is Life? Is it ability to think? The ability to move?
According to Webster's dictionary “the ability to grow, change, etc., that separates plants and animals from things like water or rocks”
So what is “artificial” life • “Artificial life attempts to understand the essential general properties of living systems by synthesizing life-like behavior in software, hardware and biochemical” • “Soft” Artificial Life is purely digital and does not have any hardware to it • Similar to sim software • “Hard” Artificial Life is hardware imitating a life like system • Like a terminator “sci-fi machine” • “Wet” Artificial Life is taking actual biochemical and producing life like actions. • Like the Blob “also sci-fi”
AL roots • The term Artificial Life was officially invested by Christopher Langton • Envisioned life in any setting • Creators of the first AL model • John Von Neumann / Norbert Wiener • the Cellular automata, the first model • Simulates self-reproduction
Artificial life vs intelligence AL AI Simulates cognitive thinking Decision making Ability to learn • Simulates all aspects of life • Movement • Decision Making • Growing • Reproduction
Continued… AL AI Based of algorithms and classifier systems Primarily the intelligence Brains like activity is required for AI to make decisions. • Breaks down to beyond cellular level • Millions of simulated cells working together • Life doesn’t have to have brain
Visual products Soft AL AI
Dynamical hierarchies • Organs Tissue Cells Molecules • Simulates how living things are made up of millions of tiny organisms that work together to make up life. • Breaks away from code driven dependencies • If we lose a cell does our body quit working?
