  2. Huck Finn Satire Final Assessment • In-class essay test • 2 days (April 11 and 12, last week of six weeks) • Prompt: “Write an essay in which you analyze how Twain uses satire to achieve his purpose in the novel.” • Graphic Organizer = 12 points • Work on as you read • Will plan your essay

  3. A successful essay will include: • Introduction • Identify exigence, audience, purpose • Thesis statement • Ex: In The Adventures of Huckleberry Finn, Mark Twain employs several kinds of satire, including ___1___, ___2____, and ___3___ in order to (purpose of satire). • Device 1 = Body Paragraph 1; Device 2 = Body Paragraph 2; Device 3 = Body Paragraph 3.

  4. At least 3 – 4 body paragraphs • One per satirical device • A topic sentence identifying the type of satire to be analyzed • A definition of that satirical device or mode • A description of the novel’s action leading up to the example of satire • A properly cited quotation from the text • A summary or paraphrase of that quotation, i.e. explain what it says in your own words • An explanation of how and why the quote qualifies as a particular satirical device or mode • A discussion of the effect of the satirical device or mode on the story, the novel, the reader, etc • A mini-conclusion

  5. A successful essay will include: • Use transition words and phrases between paragraphs • Have a concluding paragraph, which will contain • A summary of the satirical devices analyzed • A conclusion about the purpose of satire in the novel • Conclusion about novel and satire’s historical/cultural significance • Include parenthetical citations for all quotes – (Twain 12).
