Sensory-Friendly Zoo Day TWU Occupational Therapy Students
Today I will be going to the zoo. There will be a lot of animals to see and fun activities to do. http://ontheworldmap.com/usa/city/dallas/dallas-zoo-map.html
The animals I want to see will be behind a fence or glass. This is their home.
If I want to talk to an animal, I can wave, smile, or speak softly. The animal may get scared if I climb on the fence or tap on the glass.
Some animals may come close to me. It might be fun to get a closer look. It is also okay if I want to step away from the animal.
There might be a lot of people looking at an animal I want to see. I will try to stand behind people and wait until they leave so I can move closer.
Some things at the zoo might smell bad. I can cover my nose if I smell something bad or go to a different area.
Sometimes there are loud noises at the zoo. If I hear noises that are too loud, I can cover my ears. http://img.aws.livestrongcdn.com/ls-article-image-400/cme/cme_public_images/www_livestrong_com/photos.demandstudios.com/getty/article/94/60/LS002592_XS.jpg
There might be some animals I don’t like to look at. If I see something I don’t like, I can cover my eyes or walk away and look at a different animal. http://www.parent24.com/Baby/Toddler_1-2/development_behaviour/Cutest-research-ever-20121025
Some animals at the zoo are real and others are not. Real animals are behind a fence or glass. If I am are not sure if the animal is real or not, I can ask someone wearing a green shirt and name tag.
These are animals that are not real. These are real animals.
At the zoo, there is a monorail ride I can ride to see the entire zoo or to go to a different location of the zoo. I can see many animals and exhibits on the ride. It is fun to try and spot the animals from the monorail, especially the ones hiding in the trees. The engineer is in charge of how long the monorail lasts and where the monorail stops. When riding the monorail, I will sit in a seat. This is the safest way to ride the monorail and also allows others to see the view.
There is a special monorail ride at 9:00am for my family. This ride will have not have music or a person talking on a microphone. I will show the attendant at the monorail ticket booth my family’s blue wrist band to get a ticket. The monorail might be full when I go to get a ticket. That is okay. There are many other activities I can do on Zoo North.
It is okay to not like walking under the tunnel and there are a few things I can do that may help me feel better about walking through to the other side. I can cover my ears. I can close my eyes and hold someone’s hand. I can imagine what’s on the other side, or imagine my favorite place.
Pretending the tunnel is a cave in Africa, a forest, or a pirate cove can help me feel better about walking under the tunnel. I can use my imagination to pretend the tunnel is anyplace or anything I want it to be, and before I know it, I’m in Africa!
There are quiet spaces I can go to if I need a break. I can find these spaces by looking at my map. They are called Sensory Havens. This one is in the Tiger Classroom.
There are activities like crafts and outdoor games. If I want to do these activities, I can ask my parents. My parents like when I ask them if it is okay to do something. http://norvor.com/galleryalbum/toilet-paper-tube-crafts.html
Walking around the zoo and seeing all the animals is fun. It can also make me tired. I can tell my parents if I get tired. My parents like when I tell them how I feel. https://www-tc.pbs.org/parents/education/files/2012/03/467x267-girltalkingtoparents-ts-283x162.jpg
When it is time to leave the zoo, the exit sign shows me the way out. I can always come back to the zoo on another day if there were animals I did not get to see.
