What is Shyness? Shyness is the feeling of awkwardness which is often accompanied by a lack of comfort when a person is approached by other people, especially in new situations or with unfamiliar people. Shyness is present in many forms and degrees. Stronger or more prevalent forms are usually classified as social anxiety or phobia. What is the cause of shyness? -It is an ego-driven fear. Sufferers are afraid of what other's will think of their actions. -This fear of some form of rejection from others drives a shy person to to avoid social situation.
Symptoms Physiological symptoms - Blushing. - Muscle tension. - Sweating/ sweaty hands. - Increase in heart rate . - Feeling sick, upset stomach or butterflies. - Shaking. - Dry mouth. Behavioral symptoms - Not speaking or saying very little. - Stuttering. - Very little or no eye contact. - Standing apart from others. - Speaking in a low voice.
Tips For Teaching Shy Students • Normalize shyness and depict it in a positive light. • Make regular contact. • Give shy children a job to do. • Comment on their successes and post their work. • Help children learn to initiate contact with others. • Educate parents. • Reward small improvements. • Keep an eye out for teasing.
