What is a rip? • A rip is a current in the water which is made by the wind. • Often rips pull you out and sometimes under the water. • Rip can be dangerous, but the best thing to do if caught in a rip is to tell people around and shout for help.
How do I escape a rip? • First thing to do is call for help, always remember to stay calm. • If help is not available then try to swim back to shore, if the rip is to strong or you are a weak swimmer then stop, and conserve your energy. • If you are a strong swimmer then swim back to shore at a 45 degree angle back to shore; if you are a weak swimmer turn to the side and swim 30 strokes then catch the waves back to shore.
How to identify a rip. When identify a rip look for: choppy water a different colour in the water and breaks in the waves in one spot.
