  1. Do Now Complete the handout for our new Greek root! Have our your Douglass passages.

  2. Thesis Statement **Take Notes** What is a thesis statement?

  3. How do I write one? • Most important things to remember: • A thesis must be able to stand alone • Thus, it must include the title of the work and the author • It is at the end of your introduction • Your entire essay is written to prove that it is true. This is your anchor! • Thus, it must be arguable. It is not a statement of fact! • It must tell the reader both what you are trying to prove and how you are going to prove it.

  4. Thesis Formula In (Title of the Work) by (author), (statement of opinion that answers the prompt) is shown by / is proven by example 1, example 2, example 3, etc. • If you have more than 3 examples, you can categorize them or make generalizations. • The most important thing: Tell us your evidence in the order that you are going to write about it. • Order tip: Good, Meh, Best • Protect the weakest link and drive it home in the end

  5. Example Thesis Prompt: Purpose, demonstrated through writing style In Act 1 of Macbeth, Shakespeare uses witchcraft to emphasize fate as the play’s controlling factor as shown by the diction of the stage directions, altered mood, and the syntax of the prophecies. **Note: The three examples are categories. This could easily be an 8 + page paper!**

  6. How do I write a strong paragraph? • When you are stuck on how to write an academically advanced paragraph, remember this acronym! • S • E • X • Y • (T)

  7. Remember… • You are trying everything in your essay to the chapter’s purpose and role in the novel. • Diction • How does that word choice tie into the novel? • Syntax • If it flows or causes you to stop and think, why? • Mood • Why would he want the reader to feel this way? • What words or sentences create this? • Tone • What is the cause of his attitude? How do you know what it is? Your job is to explain more than what, now it’s your job to explain WHY!
