Purpose of the Day • To set Leicestershire position in context • To inspire and develop leadership capacity • To provide guidance on career pathways
Leicestershire Headteacher Age profiles • 63% of headteachers are over 50 • In the primary sector 57% are 50+ and in the secondary sector 76% • There are no headteachers under 30 in primary and none under 40 in secondary • In primary schools 18% are between 31 and 40
Leicestershire Deputy Headteacher Age Profiles • 46% of DHT’s are over 50 • 38% of primary DHT’s are over 50 (60%secondary DHT’s) • In primary schools .3% are between 21 -30.
Assistant Headteacher Age Profiles • 43% are 50+ • 33% are under 40 • 3% are under 30 • Gender balance is 61% female and 39% male
Context • Both nationally and locally: • Developing leaders for the future is a priority • NCSL funds are critical in “building capacity” • “Succession planning” is new on both schools’ and governors’ agendas • Schools need to work more closely in clusters to plan for succession • Headteachers must spot and nurture talent • NPQH trainees should have a clear career path to headship
How can The LA support • Training • Shadowing • Acting roles – (subject to permission) • Guidance - ( via email and through surgeries)
How Governors Can Support • Talk to headteacher about the schools succession planning model. • Ask about leadership opportunities within school – Is the school doing all it can to promote / develop leaders. • Release staff for acting roles.
