Who goes to Saeger Middle School? • You will be one of approximately 800 students. • SMS will have 250 6th graders who will come primarily from Fairmount, Warren, Central, and Castlio Elementary Schools
The schedule • School starts 8:15, ends at 3:15 • Classes are about 48 minutes • Students will have a Home Base for 20 minutes at the start of the day then… • ELA, social studies, math, science, P.E. / health • band, choir, Spectra (if qualified)OR resource • Exploratory (Explo) • Read 180/System 44
Band • 6th grade band is divided by instruments. • The band divisions are brass, flute, clarinet, saxophone, percussion. • If you are signing up for band, you will be in band for the entire school year. • Ms. Crepps will help you select the instrument best suited for you if just starting band.
Choir • If selected, this would be one of your Encore periods for the year. • Performs at special school concerts, i.e. concert before Holiday Break. • Special community performances
Exploratory Wheel • Exploratory is designed to allow 6th graders to spend a quarter in four different classes. • The 6th graders explore art, industrial technology, Engineering By Design, TIL, foreign language, speech and drama, piano keyboarding, and family and consumer science (FACS) as part of an Explo Wheel.
Physical Education / Health • Students have P.E. every day for 3 quarters and health every day for 1 quarter. • When you have P.E. you will need to dress out every day.
P.E. Uniforms • The cost of the P.E. uniform will be $15.00. • You may purchase the uniform in August when you get your schedule. • Make sure you take your p.e. uniform home each week to be washed. You may keep deodorant in your p.e. locker.
Home Base and Houses • Meets 20 minutes at start of day, each day • Stay with same Home Base teacher and class through 8th grade • Purpose is to build community and relationships within the larger school • Home Base is a time to discuss the Spartan Way, get assistance, and to set/monitor goals • Each Home Base belongs to a House
Houses • Consist of 6, 7, and 8 grade Home Bases • Connect students with others across grade levels • Develop an identity within the school • Participate in various team building and service projects as a House • Compete against other Houses for top house of the semester
The Spartan Way • School-wide positive support process • Be Respectful! Be Responsible! Be Safe! • Teach, discuss, review, recognize expectations • Emphasis on the positive and what’s expected • Caught-chas and other recognition
Being Organized • You are encouraged to check the calendars teachers’ links on the website. • Some teachers have other resources on their links • These link help you if you have been absent, forgotten to write down an assignment, or want to double check your assignments. • Planners provided each quarter
Progress Reports • It is more challenging to keep track of your grades in middle school. • Formal progress reports will be posted on Parent Portal about 5 weeks before grade cards. • WE ARE GREEN--- all mid quarters and report cards are on Parent Portal • We will send out enews and post on marquee • You will be expected to use a homework planner. • You can ask your teacher at any time how you are doing in their class. • Parents have access to grades/assignments through Parent Portal.
What can your parents do to help? • Check teachers’ website links. • Check your assignment notebook daily. • Review and save graded papers. • Establish a homework routine in your home and provide positive and negative consequences for study habits. • Check Parent Portal regularly. • ENEWS! Success for all • Most students can succeed if they complete their homework. • You may need help, so be sure to ask for it! • Lack of work completion results in poor grades which can lead to bad attitudes and poor behavior. • We try to avoid that with tutoring and Saturday Schools.
How to avoid detention • BE RESPESCTFUL! BE RESPONSIBLE! BE SAFE! • Return notes from the teachers the next day. • Check to make sure you have the correct supplies. • Read over the FHSD Code of Conduct and the Saeger Parent/Student Handbook with your parents. • Have high expectations for yourself at all times.
The Dress Code A.K.A.The Seven ‘B’s’ Backs Bedroom Wear Bellies and above Bottoms Boxers Bras (avoid skinny straps on shirts, low cut) Bad language, beer, and other bad taste
Violation of the dress code • Dress plays a big role in attitude and setting the tone for learning. • If you come to school dressed inappropriately, you will be allowed to cover up with a sweatshirt, wear a loaner T-shirt, or wear their PE uniform. • Please check the messages on your clothing. If you question it, don’t wear it.

Important Dates • Schedule pick-up will be held in late July/early August • Middle School Transition Day will be held the day before the First Day of School.
Transition Day • Transportation provided! • Simple lunch menu available (bring money) or can bring lunch • Enrollment forms will be sent home from your child’s 5th grade class. • We will help students get acclimated, establish expectations, hold a celebration assembly, and introduce them to their classrooms and extra curricular programs
Remember • Registration Forms are due January 24 to your 5th grade teacher. • We both want you to be successful and have a GREAT middle school experience! • Together we will navigate through middle school.
