This presentation (What I expect) • Analysis • Make some conclusions about your topic
Most important: • Present to your audience • Practice
Oral presentation is different from written • Audience can’t go back & re-read what they’ve missed • Keep it simple • Pictures are more memorable than text • Emphasize (repeat) key points
Content: • Title: • Specific to your talk • Concise • Catchy is good, but not necessary • Don’t get too ‘cute’
Not good: The potential of stem cell research • Not good: Injection of stem cells induces re-ensheathing of axons whose myelin had degraded thereby providing a potential cure for Alzheimer’s disease and other neurodegenerative diseases • Good? Potential cures for Alzheimer’s disease arise from stem cell research
Content: Beginning • Start strong: gain audience’s attention • Humor? Joke/anecdote related to your topic • Confidence • Might want to outline your talk • Give key points early • ‘Suspense’ not necessarily the best option
Content: Middle • What are your key points? • 3 or so in a 15 minute talk • (how) do they connect? • Watch your transitions
Content: End • Summarize, make conclusions • Strong wrap-up No: Well, that’s all I have! Yes: Thank you for your attention. I’d be happy to take any questions
General comments • Speak slower • Try not to ‘read’ • Don’t use a script • Note cards with key words? • Any text on slides should support what you’re saying • Practice
Font size Forty point (arial) Thirty-two Twenty-four Eighteen Twelve Eight
Contrast • Make sure it’s visible/legible • Some color combinations don’t work
Confidence • Presence • Eye contact • Strong voice (Practice)
Practice • ONLY way to be sure your timing’s right • Less ‘fumbling’ • Your practice audience • Let you know what doesn’t make sense • Point out errors (spelling, etc.)
