BI is dood. Lang leve BI! December 2008, NGI Kring Den Haag Erik-Jan van der Linden, ej@magnaview.com
The role of data Amount of data grows exponentially. Putting data to good use is essential • To stay ahead of competitors (profit sector); • To provide services at level requested by public/govern (non-profit). Proper use of data • Helps find answers to strategic changes.
Current situation w.r.t. use of data Huge investments in • data warehousing, • business intelligence, • corporate performance management, • management reporting; • in tools, hardware, training…. But where’s the impact…?
Example • Demographic developments (Europe is aging) • Analyze the age of personnel • Four organizations • P.S. test it yourself: take 10 seconds… • Which organization has to take action w.r.t. demographic developments? Should I take action?
Approach Interactieve, visuele analyse en presentatie. in-memory, van grote datasets. Fast loading Strong compression 1.000.000+ records 100+ attributes
Case: hospital • Emerging market for health care services; • Datawarehouse plus BI-solution available; • Project for definition of performance indicators; • Analysis of five programs; presentation to medical and administrative staff.
BI is dead! • Anchor concepts in the perceived environment of the user; • Raw data – variation; • Users in control instead of IT; • BI not an end-point.
b. Raw data in-memory less sensitive to noise Analysiswithnoisy data mayreveal… … need to improve data… … whilestillshowingvaluable business conclusions. Lessdebateabout data.
c. Users in control IT In BI, IT determines availability of data. Limited user interaction.
d. BI is an end-point: instances are filtered in data warehouse.
