Strengths • Generally stable political system • UK strong brand • Strong growth; reasonable macro economic fundamentals • Abundant natural resources presenting good investment and trade opportunities • MFEZ - Incentives • Unlimited repatriation of after tax profits • Progressive banking, legal and insurance services of international standards. • Good place to work & live, friendly people
Trade and investment opportunities • Mining: Zambia possesses Africa’s largest known copper and emerald reserves • Agriculture: only 1.5 m ha of the 42m ha arable land is under cultivation; accounts for about 40% of the fresh water resources in Southern Africa • Energy: Potential to produce 6,000MW of hydro energy, currently only producing 1, 980MW • Manufacturing: Multi Facility Economic Zones established to support investment • Tourism: 20 national parks, 34 game management areas, home to Victoria falls • Infrastructure: Massive projects being undertaken, roads, rail, electricity generation and airports • Rapidly growing urban middle class
Challenges • Landlocked country, input costs tend to be high • Underperforming education and training system • Poor infrastructure • Red tape • Limits on work permits for expats • Preferential treatment of Zambian companies bidding for public contracts • Regulatory changes introduced with little notice • Political constraints to laying off workers • Land rights for customary land can be bureaucratic UNCLASSIFIED
Conclusion • No UKTI presence at present • A market that requires work • But strong economic growth and good margins
