Luke: Physician, Historian, Theologian Luke – God’s Love for the Lost through Jesus • I wrote about all that Jesus began to do and to teach, (Acts 1:1) Acts – God’s Love for the Lost through the Church • But you will receive power when the Holy Spirit comes on you; and you will be my witnesses, (Acts 1:8) Luke was the largest single writer of the NT - over 27%
Luke/Acts - Holy Spirit – The empowering agent of those who tell the story of God’s search for His lost children. • Jesus returned to Galilee in the power of the Spirit…“The Spirit of the Lord is on me, because he has anointed me to preach good news (Luke 4:14, 18). • …they were all filled with the Holy Spirit and spoke the word of God boldly, (Acts 4:31).
“Pentecost” • Jewish Festival Days 50 (Greek LXX pentekontahemeras) after Passover • Marks completion of harvest, 7 weeks • Feast of Weeks (Exodus 34:22) • “Harvest” was Jesus’ way of describing the readiness of lost people to receive God’s message of redemption in Christ (Luke 10:2)

“Power” • dunamis – the ability of God given for the purpose of fulfilling a divine commission.
“Witnesses” • maruts – one who brings to mind and speaks regarding the facts regarding something; includes believing in those facts and speaking so as to convince others of their truth. • REMEMBER – BELIEVE – SPEAK
Empowered to Speak • Zechariah was filled with the Holy Spirit and prophesied (Luke 1:67 TNIV) • At that time Jesus, full of joy through the Holy Spirit, said (Luke 10:21 TNIV) • All of them were filled with the Holy Spirit and began to speak in other tongues as the Spirit enabled them (Acts 2:4 TNIV).
