  1. During the Video… • Watch and listen for information about molecules and their role in physical changes. • Take as many notes as you can from the video and write them in the appropriate column. • There will be a competition requiring lots of good notes! • Write legibly and give yourself room for lots of notes. http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=guoU_cuR8EE http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=eWQuE0X-sTI

  2. Share your notes with your partner • Read through your notes from the video together. • Add any notes that you both missed. • Get as many note about molecules and physical changes down as you can. • Make sure that you have all the same notes that your partner does and that they make sense. • Be prepared to share with the class.

  3. Who has the most notes? • Set down your pencils/pens. • Pick up a red pen. • When you are called on, share one of the notes you collected. • If you hear a note that you have, put a check beside it with the red pen. • If you hear a note you don’t have, write it down with the red pen. • The same note cannot be shared twice! When it is your team’s turn, share one without a check. • We’ll go around the room until no one has any notes left to share.

  6. Chemical Changes in Matter

  7. Page 31: Friday, 4/5/13 Today’s Agenda Today’s Learning Target I can explain how matter changes chemically. Chemical Changes

  8. Page 31 Notes: Chemical Changesin Matter • Matter is chemically changed when one kind of molecule is rearranged into a different kind of molecule. • A chemical change occurs when … • Matter is burned. • Matter explodes. • Some chemicals mix. • Food is digested. • Living things grow. • Dead things decompose.

  9. Page 30: Chemical Change • Specific examples • A slice of soft moist bread + heat  black, crunchy burnt toast. • Human egg + sperm  a fetus. • Brand new car + air and moisture  rusty, old car. • Peanut-butter and pickle sandwich + digestion .  Mr. Snider. E. Egg + time and care  chick. F. Acorn + nutrients, water, sun  Oak Tree. Read  as “is rearranged into.”

  10. These are all chemical changes because the molecules of matter before the change are different than the molecules of matter after the change. Burning, rusting , growing and exploding rearrange molecules. CHEMICAL CHANGES

  11. Table TalkDiscuss the CHEMICAL change in each picture.

  12. Table Talk What is a Chemical Change of Matter? What is another example of Chemical Change?

  13. Table Talk What is the difference between physical changes and chemical changes? Hint: consult your notes.

  14. Table Talk: How is matter changing? Physical, Chemical, or both?

  15. TARGET • Rereadtoday’s learning target. • Think about what you learned today. • In the summary box, demonstrate your understanding of the target. Do, what the target says you can do! • Write a letter grade: A, B, C, D or F for yourself next to the summary. • Be honest. This grade is meant to help you know your strengths and weaknesses. • Be prepared to show and share your understanding.
