Religionless Christianity and True Discipleship Matthew 5-7
The Visible Community (5:13-48) “Moreover, I will give you a new heart and put a new spirit within you; I will remove the heart of stone from your flesh and give you a heart of flesh. I will put my Spirit within you and cause you to walk in My statutes, and you will be careful to observe My ordinances.” -Ezekiel 36:26-27
The Visible Community (5:13-48) • As the new covenant, Spirit-indwelt people of God, Christians: • Not only don’t murder, but don’t even hate (5:21-26). • Not only don’t commit adultery, but don’t even lust (5:27-30). • Not only don’t divorce for any reason, but don’t divorce at all (5:31-32). • Not only don’t make false vows they don’t keep, but don’t make any vows (5:33-37).
The Visible Community (5:13-48) • As the new covenant, Spirit-indwelt people of God, Christians: • Not only don’t insist on their “rights” and justice, but allow themselves to be insulted and taken advantage of (5:38-42). • Not only love their neighbor, but love their enemies (5:43-48).
The Hidden Righteousness (6:1-7:12) • The hidden righteousness of true disciples compels them to: • Give to the poor (6:2-4). • Pray sincerely and thoughtfully (6:5-13). • Forgive others (6:14-15). • Fast sincerely and not for show (6:16-18). • Live frugal lives (6:19-24). • Be not anxious (6: 25-34). • Not judge hypocritically (7:1-6)
