General Information When Taroko National Park was established on November 28, l986, it was of special significance for the environmental protection movement in Taiwan.
According to the National Park Act of the Republic of China (passed in l972), parks are established to protect the natural scenery, historic relics and wildlife; to conserve natural resources; and to facilitate scientific research and promote environmental education.
Nature in Taroko Taroko National Park difference of altitude within the park provides the visitor with the pleasure of experiencing obvious climate changes along the Central Cross-Island Highway.
Subtropical to high altitude vegetation can be observed during a single trip. The visitor is rewarded with captivating experiences brought about by seasonal changes and altitude difference.
Fauna Most of Taroko National Park is undisturbed wilderness, and its wildlife is diverse. So far, 152 species of birds have been recorded in the park, including 14 species unique to Taiwan ,such as Swinhoe’s Pheasant(藍腹鷴 ), Formosan BIue Magpie (台灣藍鵲 )
In addition, 46 species of large mammals, including the black bear(黑熊) , Formosan Macaque(獼猴), Formosan Serow(台灣長鬃山羊 ) , Formosan wild boar(台灣野豬 ) , and Formosan Sambar Deer(台灣水鹿) ,are found in abundance in the many undisturbed natural areas.
Flora The elevation of Taroko Park anges from sea level up to 3,700 meters and consists of different climatic zones. As a result, all the kinds of vegetation found on Taiwan are represented within the park. According to preliminary investigations, more than 2,093 species of native vascular plants grow within the park, 132 of these being rare or endangered species.
Among the most spectacular sights of the gorge are the mountains, some of them over 3,000 meters high. There are many flowers on high mountain peaks, such as the Hypericum nagaswia (金絲桃), Rhododendron noriakianum (杜鵑花) which entangle themselves with the high mountain juniper among the hard rock and gravel.
