  1. What is a Kontos? • Kontos is an exciting new insecticide/miticide providing growers, flexible, broad-spectrum control of a wide range of Nursery and Greenhouse pests.

  2. What is a Kontos?...Really. • Kontos was the Greek name for a type of long wooden cavalry lance. The kontos was developed in the early-mid 1st century AD from shorter spear-type weapons.

Kontos™Insecticide/Miticide • Active Ingredient: Spirotetramat • Mode of Action: Group 23, Tetramic Acids • REI: 0 hr as a drench*, 24 hr as foliar • Signal Word: Caution • Formulation: 2 lb per gallon suspension concentrate. • Package: 6 x 250mL *Under certain conditions, please consult the label Kontos is a trademark of Bayer Corp.

  4. KontosInsecticide/Miticide • Mode of Action: • Lipid biosynthesis inhibitor • Active primarily by ingestion • Does have some contact activity • Primarily active on immature stages of insects and mites. • Reproduction of adult insects and mites may be reduced. • No known cross resistance

  5. KontosInsecticide/Miticide • Unique Full Systemic Movement • Kontos is fully systemic, moving through phloem and xylem to all plant tissues including new shoot, leaf and root growth

KontosInsecticide/Miticide • Safe on Many beneficials • Coccinelids – harmless to slightly harmful • Cecidomyiids – harmless • Anthacorids, Geocorids, etc. – harmless • Aphelinids, Aphidids, Trichogrammatids, etc. – harmless • Spiders – harmless to slightly harmful • Chrysopids – harmless • Syrphids – harmless • Phytoseiid mites – harmless to moderately harmful.

  17. KontosInsecticide/Miticide • Application Rates: • Foliar applications: 1.7 to 3.4 fl. oz./100 gal. or 5 to 8 fl. oz/acre. • A spray adjuvant with spreading/penetrating charecteristics may improve leaf uptake and systemic activity of the active ingredient.

  18. KontosInsecticide/Miticide • Application Rates: • Aerial applications: 5 to 8 fl. oz / acre in a minimum of 5 GPA. • Drench applications: 1.7 fl oz for herbaceous crops. 3.4 fl. oz. for woody crops. • Drench rates vary depending on container size. Please consult the label.

KontosInsecticide/Miticide • Tank Mixing: • Kontos is physically and biologically compatible with most common pesticides and fertilizers. • In the absence of local knowledge of desired tank mix, please contact OHP or consult the label for instructions on conducting a compatibility test. • Tank mixes, including adjuvants, should also be tested for plant safety.

  20. KontosInsecticide/Miticide • Restrictions: • Do not apply more than 25 fl. oz. per acre of nursery per season. • Do not apply more that 5 fl. oz. per acre per season to vegetables. • To reduce run off potential, avoid outdoor applications when rainfall is expected in 48 hours.

KontosInsecticide/Miticide • KONTOS is not recommended for use on the following varieties: • geraniums (Pelargonium spp.), orchids, hoya, Dracaena, Cordyline, Schefflera, neanthebella palm, and ferns. • Do not make more than one application per season to: • Hydrangea, Impatiens spp., crotons (Codieum spp.), Fuschia hybrids, Petunia, Peperomia, stock, or cyclamens (Cyclamen spp.). • Extensive phyto screening has been done with Kontos, however, it is always a good idea to test tank mixes prior to commercial applications.

  23. KontosInsecticide/Miticide • Application tips: • Apply early in the cropping cycle, prior to heavy infestations • Root system must be present for effective control as a drench. • Applications may benefit from the addition of a surfactant.
