6th Grade Career Carnival • Held late October/early November • ½ day only • Approximately 1000 6th graders, their teachers, and parents • All career cluster areas offered at EOC Tech are represented.
Career Cluster Games Represented (a few examples) • Health – name the organ/poo toss • Digital media – your on the cover! • Construction – hammer race • Automotive – slot racers • Masonry – tic, tac, brick
Career Cluster Games Represented (a few examples) • Computer repair/networking – computer gaming • Fire Academy – firefighter’s obstacle course • Graphic arts – face painting • Early Care – diaper relay • Web page service – spider web toss
How the day is spent • Welcomed off the busses – rules and schedule • Carnival time – small prizes, takes the whole building • Career DARE 2008 (or 2009, 0r 2010, you get the drift) • Career cluster game show. • Kids vs. teachers, door prizes, lots of fun, screaming and mess. • Teachers always win! • Presentation of School Banners
8th grade EXPLORE test Pre-presentation • Presented to all 8th graders before they take their ACT EXPLORE test. • Presented in small and large groups depending on the school. • Included what the test is for, like and what the results mean. • Anecdotal evidence points to improved motivation and effort on test. • Credit to MNTC
Why should I care about the Explore Test • It will tell you if you are on track for college admission and high school graduation. • It is a predictor of your score on the PLAN and ACT tests. • It helps you “narrow your focus” on a career path by understanding your likes and dislikes.
8th grade REALITY STORE • Held in the spring at the tech center. • Uses the career areas identified by their EXPLORE test results. • Tables are set up for each station/expense of life. Time is stopped at least twice to hand out emergencies. http://www.bpwindiana.org/files/index.php?id=15

Vital Statistics • What is your job/career area? • What degree do you have? • How much money do you make? • Are you married or single? • Does you spouse work? • How many kids do you have?
Freshmen Walk Thru • Time line – after testing/before enrollment • Purposes are to get the freshmen into our building one more time AND get them out of their buildings one more time (after testing). • Small group tours of 10-15 • Led by Superintendent’s Advisory Council members or other selected students.
