Why are LLCs important? • Four key factors that impact the sense of community • Membership • Influence • Fulfillment of individuals needs • Shared emotional connections (McMillan and Chavis, 1986) • Need to craft an intentional community that meets the expectations and needs of students (& institution)
Why are LLCs important? • When students feel a sense of community, they are more likely to persist and report positive feels about their college experience (Tinto, 1985) • Students' sense of belongingand community (outcome) is a relationship between the student's expressed interest in a wellness community (inputs) and the experience, programs, and other residential initiatives (environment) (Astin, 1985)
Why are LLCs important? • Research suggests that given the proper support and challenge, a community can be created to positively influence outcomes such as learning, persistence, and satisfaction with the residential experience. • Astin, Tinto, McMillan, & Chavis help understand the relationship and value of intentional experiences in regards to students' sense of belonging and community in the wellness living-learning environment
Comparing Two Wellness LLCs • University of Central Florida • “Healthy Lifestyles” in an apartment-style community • Live in an environment free of alcohol, tobacco, illegal drugs and not currently prescribed prescription drugs • Encouraged to attend health and wellness programs within their community and on campus • Provide health and wellness resources throughout the academic year • Opportunity to enroll in a section of HLP 2701 (Peer Education Training) reserved exclusively for Healthy Lifestyles Community residents • Must commit to and abide by all of the community standards in the Healthy Lifestyles Agreement & Community Living Guide • Responsibility for guests, not using substances, administrative moves
