Aims of the session • To outline the Year 9-11 GCSE and Vocational pathways. • To outline how to make a good choice. • To explain English and Mathematics courses from Year 9.
Year 9 Courses from September 2012 All Year 8 students will begin GCSE courses in September 2012. Subjects that remain non-optional… English Mathematics Science MFL R.E. P.E

Off-site Vocational Courses Blue Pathway • These are only for people who are mature and sensible enough to be trusted to go to placements away from school, some are as much as 4 or 5 miles away. • These courses will begin in Year 10. • We expect to be able to offer courses in: • Construction • Catering • Hair & Beauty • Motor Vehicles

GCSE English Language and English Literature English Language Unit 1 – 1 X 2hr exam on response to reading and two writing tasks Unit 2 – 3 x Speaking and Listening tasks Unit 3 – a) Extended Reading on a literature text b)2 X Creative writing tasks c) Spoken Language task Exam = 40% Controlled Assessment = 60%
English Literature Unit 1 – 1 x 11/2 hour exam on two literature texts Unit 2 – 1 x 1hr 15 minute exam on poetry Unit 3 – 1 task on Shakespeare and one other text Exam = 75% Controlled Assessment = 25%
Controlled Assessment Pupils will have a set time , usually 2 –3 hours to complete the task in controlled conditions. THIS MEANS – • Total concentration in all lessons • Attendance in all lessons • Taking notes in all lessons • Being organised!
GCSE Maths - Sept 2012 • Our exam board is Edexcel • All sets will follow a linear course • Set 1 and 2 study the Higher tier • Set 3,4 & 5 study the Foundation tier • Set 1 will also study towards either GCSE Statistics or another FSMQ • (free standing mathematics qualification).
Linear Course • One set of exams in Summer 2015 (summer of Year 11) • No coursework • Course has 4 key strands • (Number, Algebra, Shape & Data)
