Working with Social Media Influencersto Promote Your Product with Desiree Peeples @MommyReporter and Jennifer Hutcheson @Mami2Mommy
Step 1: Clarify Your Goal • Identifying popular bloggers and influencers is NOT the first step. • Know exactly what it is you’re trying to accomplish. • Product launch? • Educate the market? • Activate advocacy? • Motivate to action?
Create engagement value What value can you provide to the blogger/influencer? How can you make people actually care?
Ideas… • Sneak peek at a new product • Link to them • Can the influencer meet the designer, inventor, etc.? • Feature them on your company site • Offer them a paid position as a consultant
Step 2: Identify who you want to work with • Match influencers with engagement opportunities. • Don’t decide strictly based on unique monthly page views. • Filter for relevance and receptivity to your brand. • Learn what unique experience you can create
Where to find influencers? • Blog directories: Technorati.com, BlogCatalog.com, Alltop.com • Where to check a site’s stats: Alexa.com, Quantcast.com • Reach out via email
Remember… The blogger/influencer you choose to work with should be a representation of your audience… NOT your product category
Step 3:Design your relationship • Always operate ethically and honestly. Learn the FTC and WOMMA rules/guidelines. • Never outsource working with influencers. • Listen to influencers. Read their blogs, connect at events, be available offline as well. • Maintain the relationship. No “one night stand” or “booty call” engagements.
Bonus:How to score points with influencers • Link back to their blog posts • Retweet their tweets • Share their posts on your Facebook page (be sure to let them know) • Leave comments on their blogs. • Leave comments on their Facebook fan pages. • Recommend their blogs to others.
The 3 Step Plan: • Clarify Your Goals – figure out what you have and who your customers are who influences them. • Identify Who You Want to Work With – remember to focus on the audience not necessarily on the blog or website. • Design Your Relationship – link back, offer something of value, don’t base it on “friendship,” think and focus long-term.
