  1. Browser Video Speed Problem: Video stalling, stuttering when playing news video clip.

  2. Browser Video Playback Speed Some factors affecting video speed: • ISP bandwidth speed • Network, wired or wireless internet connections • PC hardware: CPU speed, RAM and video memory • PC software: browser choice, other apps running, malware if present • Browser & Adobe Flash settings

  3. Browser Video Speed ISP bandwidth considerations: • To test your internet speed go to www.broadband.gov/qualitytest/about or www.speedtest.net . My results are in a Google Docs spreadsheet. ABC, NBC, and Fox recommend at least 3Mbps for 720p HD. According to Smart Computing Magazine, 6/2010: 1.5Gbps - Provides enough bandwidth for one user to surf the Web and stream audio or stream standard-definition video. 3Mbps - Good for households with multiple Web users or a single user who wants to stream HD-quality video. 6Mbps - Capable of supporting simultaneous video streams, as well as a couple of people surfing the Web.  12Mbps - Perfect for home offices that need consistent speed for video chat and to download files and other content for work.

Browser Video Speed Network considerations: • for a wired network, unplug and replug connections to clear corrosion, check for fraying • for a DSL connection, use inline DSL filters  • for a wireless connection, avoid other radio devices, such as phones, microwaves • for wireless, avoid interference from building materials such as metal, mirrors, concrete, brick & water  • consider that the bandwidth is shared with others on the network, reducing the share for your video • make sure your network is encrypted (WPA or WPA2), so neighbors aren't piggybacking on your network

Browser Video Speed PC hardware considerations: •  Adobe Flash (used to display TV news clips) minimum system requirements for optimal playback are 128MB RAM, 64MB graphics memory and • for std. def., 480p - Intel Pentium 4 2.33GHz or AMD Athlon 2800+ processor • for HD 720p - Intel Pentium 4 3GHz or AMD Athlon 3800+ processor • for HD 1040p - Intel Core Duo 1.8GHz or AMD Athlon 64 X2 4200+ processor • H.264 video acceleration reduces processor requirements above, when present

Browser Video Speed PC Software considerations: • Use the latest browser version: Google Chrome 10, IE9, or Firefox 4 - see PC Magazine article's speed comparisons or CNET’s benchmark charts. • Make sure you have the latest version of Adobe Flash, currently 10.2.153.1 for IE and Firefox or 10.2.154.25 for Chrome. Check by right-clicking on the video. • Close unnecessary applications, windows & tabs. • Reduce screen resolution, avoid full-screen playback. • Pause video and let buffering progress bar advance. • Keep antivirus & anti-spyware software updated.

Browser Video Speed Browser & Adobe Flash Settings: • On an older PC, it may help to turn off hardware acceleration in Adobe Flash: right-click video, click Settings… & uncheck it. • Clear the browser's temporary internet files, cookies, and possibly browser history. • Remove unneeded browser add-ons and plugins.
