Endocrine System at a glance • Regulate Hormones • Regulates Body Processes • Saliva • Sweat
Location • Located near the kidney
What does it do • The adrenal gland produces multiple hormones • Each hormone effects bodily functions such as blood sugar levels and light-headedness
The major hormones • Glucocorticoids • Mineralocorticoids • Catecholamines - Epinephrine - Norepinephrine
Glucocorticoids • Known as cortisol • Controls blood glucose levels
Mineralocorticoids • Controls sodium levels in the body • Prevents you from feeling light-headed
Catecholamines • Epinephrine • Norepinephrine • Fight or flight reactions • Adrenaline and Noradrenaline
Waterhouse-Friderichsensyndrome • Failure of Adrenal Gland due to bleeding • Due to bacterial infection • Shock and acute failure of gland • Death if untreated
Addison's disease • When adrenal gland under produces • Can lead to hemorrhaging and hormonal imbalances • Autoimmune disorder
Fun facts • Derived from latin words for “near Kidneys”, not adrenaline • Works with pituitary gland and hypothalamus
