CMIC Expansion Plans – Phase 3 2009 Reasons for Expansion Increasing Muslim population in the area Muslim immigrants entering the area Fully segregated area and improved facilities for ladies Dedicated Janazah room Reduce risk of flooding by moving current wash areas and WCs (basement) to the new building (above ground level) Better equipped ablution areas, WCs and specialist disabled WCs.
CMIC Expansion Plans – Phase 3 2009 Increasing Muslim Population in Croydon Lack of Muslim facilities/prayer areas • Two Friday Congregations in many neighbouring mosques • CMIC and Norbury Islamic Academy hold two Jumma prayers to cater for the number of attendees • Thornton Heath Islamic Centre are planning to hold two Jummas in the near future • Lack of female facilities • Sisters’ Islamic circles are sometimes held at their homes. CMIC is first to provide basic facilities in South London for Sisters. • No fully segregated female-only buildings can be found in the local area • 22,000 Registered Muslims • Those registered on the Electoral Roll • 6,000 Unregistered Muslims • Those not on the Electoral Roll such as Students, Foreigners, Visitors and Refugees
CMIC Expansion Plans – Phase 3 2009 Lack of Funeral Services in Croydon and the Surrounding Areas • Croydon Masjid was the first masjid to provide Janazah facilities in the South London area • Average of one Janazah is carried out by CMIC per week • The only other local masjids that provide basic Funeral services are • Balham Masjid • Streatham Masjid (started only recently)
CMIC Expansion Plans – Phase 3 2009 Attendees of the Masjid • 6,000 – 8,000 people attend the masjid on Eid day • The masjid normally establishes four Eid congregations prayers. On a few occasions a fifth prayer has been established pushing the total numbers up to 10,000! • 800 – 1,000 males attend the masjid during daily Taraweeh prayers in Ramadhan • 100 – 150 females regularly attend the Taraweeh prayers and the speeches that follow • 70 % of the attendees in Friday prayer are working class people
CMIC Expansion Plans – Phase 3 2009 Local Support and Funding Opportunities • Opportunity to Build • Unlike other mosques in the locality who are restricted in terms of expansion, we are fortunate to have no restrictions to expand this part of the building • Donations & Loans • Many people and local businesses are willing to donate and/or provide Qardh-e-Hasanah for around £100k - £200k for this noble project • Management Investments • The current management team and trustees, who have purchased two properties during their time in office, are excellent investments in providing further funds for the day to day running of the masjid • Parking arrangements • Local businesses including the neighbouring hotels and the Mayday Hospital have offered us full use of their parking areas on Juma, Eid and special occasions
CMIC Expansion Plans – Phase 3 2009 Local Support and Funding Opportunities • Lower Construction Costs • Due to the current global financial crisis, the costs of construction is lower in this current climate • Labour costs will be at the lowest for many years. This opportunity should not be missed as the cost of material is rising daily • Savings can be used to refurbish existing parts of the building • To maximise savings, building work should begin as soon as possible
