  3. Function of Signs and Markings • Signs and markings plays an important role in conveying messages to the road users. • To be effective signs and markings should be: • Simple and clear • Attract attention of road users • Large enough to see, understand, and react

  4. TYPES OF SIGNS • Regulatory Signs: for traffic laws and regulations • Examples: speeds, right-of-way, turn signs, one-way signs, pedestrian signs.

  5. TYPES OF SIGNS • Warning Signs: Provideswarnings from upcoming situations that requires attention • Examples: intersections, grades, narrow roads, railroad crossings, change in horizontal alignments, entrances...

  8. TYPES OF SIGNS • Guide Signs: Provides information to road users on routes, directions, distances, services, intersecting routes, cities, towns, villages, nearby rivers and streams, parks, forests, and historical sites

  14. PAVEMENT MARKING Lines, patterns, symbols, words, colors on surface of pavement for regulating, warning, or guiding traffic. Must draw attention of road users. Must be visible at night.

  15. TYPES OF PAVEMENT MARKING • Longitudinal: Parallel to roadway • White: separates of opposing traffic • Yellow: right edge of pavement • Broken lines: permissive • Solid lines: restrictive • Double lines: maximum restriction • Transverse: Across travel lanes • Stop line: solid white lines • Crosswalks: many indications (refer to MUTCD) • Parking lanes • Word/Symbol on surface of pavement for regulating, warning, or guiding traffic.
